Greetings! Here's a duck. It's for Dungeon Crawl Classics.

A Duck Soldier class for the Dungeon Crawl Classics RPG, created in honor of a farmer's duck that not only survived but also helped defeat the final enemy in the funnel adventure, before the characters ascended to mighty Level 1 heroes (the funnel was Nebin Pendlebrook's Perilous Pantry, and I cannot recommend the adventure enough, go out and buy it right now)! Also inspired by the wonderful Suikoden series of JRPGs, which I have spent many a sativa-fueled night playing with my very friend who played the farmer - and the duck - in the funnel. You go, Sgt. Joe!

Duck Clan Soldier

You are a progeny of the legendary Duck Clan of humanoid waterfowl, which also includes the sorcerous Swan Clan and the barbaric and belligerent Geese Clan. The Duck Clan soldiers are stalwart defenders, excellent guards and shrewd tacticians and are among most renowned and respected of mercenaries. Their sonorous quacks have been known to rally an entire army in disarray and instill both courage in allies and terror in the hearts of enemies. Being a race that has been given sentience and speech by magic, they are able to affect their allies with their quack orders in ways that can only be explained by magic

Duck Clan soldier PCs have struck out on their own to become mercenaries and forge bonds with creatures of all races almost exclusively through military camaraderie. Duck Clan soldiers follow a simple code of honor, considering those who fight alongside them a part of their flock, and striving to fulfill their orders to the best of their ability. They prefer not killing their opponents in combat, if possible.

Hit points: A Duck Clan soldier gains d8 hit points at each level.

Weapon training: A Duck Clan soldier is trained in use of all weapons and armor. They prefer using spears and polearms.

Alignment: Duck Clan soldiers are usually Neutral in alignment, sometimes being Lawful. Chaotic Duck Clan soldiers are unheard of, and one would be considered an abomination by other Duck Clan members.

Quack Die: The quacking of a duck soldier possesses a magical power that has been honed for use in combat in various ways for countless generations. The duck soldier can quack orders to others and enhance their own attacks with the power of quacking. It is highly recommended that the player actually quacks as described in the Quack Die powers, before rolling a Quack Die. Failing to do so may result in decreased effectiveness or even complete failure to active the Quack Die's power, at the Judge's discretion.

The Quack Die can be used as many times as the duck soldier has action dice per round, in any of the following ways:

Quick Quack: In the first round of any combat, the duck soldier can quack several times rapidly and then roll his Quack Die, adding the result to the initiative roll of any allies that can hear him.

Luck Quack: When spending Luck to add to a roll, the duck soldier can quack cheerfully and then spend one point of Luck to roll his Quack Die and add the result to the roll. If the duck soldier wishes to spend more than one point of Luck to affect a roll, every point after the first one counts as normal.

Quack Attack: When attacking an enemy with a melee weapon, the duck soldier can quack menacingly and then roll his Quack Die to try and perform a mighty deed of arms that is non-damaging in nature, but can result in the opponent being stunned, disarmed or knocked prone, among other things left to the Judge's discretion.

Quack Back: When an enemy casts a spell on the duck soldier or his allies, and if the duck soldier is later in the initiative order, the duck soldier can quack desperately, then roll his Quack Die and add the result to any allies that engage in a spell duel, or to the saving throws against the spell to all allies that can hear him.

Quack Medicine: Duck Soldiers are trained medics and can quack gently to add their Quack Die to their skill roll to stabilize a dying ally, or to the Luck score of a character whose body is being rolled over to determine whether they are still alive.

Luck: Being defenders and protectors above all, Duck Clan soldiers add their Luck bonus to their Armor Class.

Action dice: A Duck Clan soldier always uses their action dice for attacks. At 5th level, duck clan soldiers gain a second attack each round with their second action die, but can also use their Quack Die two times per round.
